vintage dog daybed

Here we are- it's September, and life is about to spin out of control!

I finished up this sweet dog daybed over the weekend, and I'm excited to share it with you, finally.
I found a vintage baby crib this last spring.

It didn't have a bottom to the base- just the wood slats, but I knew immediately that it would make an adorable bed.

I took it home and painted it.
Any time I have a piece with this many spindles / rods, I always opt to spray.
Brushing just makes it too goopy, and I don't like the results.

It may not be very high tech, but the results were what I wanted.
{I should mention that I sprayed primer on first since the wood was so dark to begin with}

I used Heirloom White by Rustoleum.
It's a perfect cottage white.

Then my dad took it for a few days, and cut out some of the spindles to make an opening for the front.
He also added in a custom fitted wood base for the cushion.

After a few touch ups with the paint, I got to work on the bedding!

I was a little nervous about the cushion because I wanted it to fit snuggly.
The first attempt was hideous, so I scrapped that immediately.
My plan was to do a stuffed inner liner, and then wrap it in an outer zippered layer.
It looked like a giant water balloon.

I decided to get some high density batting, and it worked beautifully.
The outer cover isn't removable, but it is still washable.

The cushion is also double sided-  I wanted the new owner to have the option of a pretty printed cotton, or minky soft fabric for their pooch.
Bella always loves anything with super soft fabric, so I knew that might be a good option for someone else too.

I added in some little side bolsters made with the minky fabric, and trimmed it out with vintage lace and ribbon.

I know it will make a darling little rest stop for a princess pooch!

My goal for the next couple weeks is to stay in touch with you even though I am in the midst of crazy time here-
School starts tomorrow (sniff)
and I have the Deepwood Vintage Market in a week and a half!

My dining room has become the staging area for pricing and packing; still trying to get workouts in to stay healthy, laundry will be climbing to the roof, and I'm sure my diet will be an embarrassing parade of fast food.

I'm super excited for this upcoming event, and I look forward to sharing some of the items I work on- it may be a bit short and sweet though!

Here's an invitation for you, if you are in the Willamette Valley the weekend of the 13th and 14th!
Click here and here for photos and more info on buying tickets to Preview / Pre-buy night.

Hope you can come!
It's a favorite event here in Salem, and always beautiful!

I hope to be back tomorrow with a follow up post to the vintage gallery hallway how to's.

xo Denise

  1. I'm in love with this dog bed. I've been toying with the idea of making my Frenchie one for his first birthday but ultimately I'm I'm too lazy and may just buy him a new bed. But this gives me inspiration again! We'll see. My dog is a boy, but I'd still feel tempted to make it pretty.

  4. Adorable. I don't know how you get your pug to sleep on anything besides pillows though. I have 2 and they are pillow seeking missiles. My Rosie is 13 and my Bella is just 5 :)
