updated living room tour

It was a blustery weekend here for us in the Pacific NW!!

It's hard to believe that a little over a week ago when I was decorating our fall porch, I had to change into shorts and a tank top because it was so warm- now, the sweaters and Uggs have definitely been more of the attire around here.

If you've been following my blog, you know that my living room has been the thorn in my side.
Five years of living in this house, and it has been my most challenging room.

With every tweak, every new furniture arrangement, I feel like it's closer to what I want.
{you can already hear me hinting that this isn't the final chapter for this room....}

Anyway, I wanted to give you a little update on some changes I've been up to in here.

The newest addition to the living room is the large cabinet you see on the right!
This room has a two story slanted ceiling, so it makes it visually difficult to decorate.
Since there's so much wall space on the main (and only) wall , I've had to get creative with filling it up.

The cabinet was an amazing find at an estate sale a week ago.
I found it in the garage (!) at the sale.
Needless to say, it was filthy being used out there.

The doors had all been removed so the sellers could use it to display more items.  I spied the doors stacked up just outside the garage door, and asked if they went with the cabinet.  It would have been an awesome piece to sell, but I didn't really have any room in our garage for a piece like this.

And then it dawned on me that Jon and I had just had a conversation about needing a tall bookcase to go in the living room.
Bingo!

The price was amazing, and after 2 hours of cleaning, bleaching, and vacuuming all the creepy crawlies out, we brought it in.
I had a scary moment shortly after- it nearly fell on top of me as I was installing the top doors.  Jon immediately installed a wall tether to it to avoid any more screaming episodes.
Yikes.

I'll give another update on this new piece later on.
I left the middle section of cabinet doors off so I could have some space to decorate.
I don't have it completed yet- still looking for some interesting vintage books and pieces to store there.
:)

I have a shorter bookcase on the other side of The Beautiful Beast.

With the exception of the cherub art and the roses, everything you see in this vignette was purchased from thrift shops.

This beautiful crystal and marble base candelabra was my latest find.

We still love our "Union Jack" salvage window frame.
It's one of my favorite purchases of all time for this room.
And, The Beautiful Beast has been a very comfy addition to this room.
The creative cushion solution has held up really well!

I am planning on a new addition chair-wise to the living room.

My first upholstery project chair will be going to a new home very soon.
I recently found a gorgeous antique cane back chair, and I am so in love with it.
I call it 'the throne'.
Intricate wood carvings, cane seat back...it has a velvet cushion, and amazing trim features, but it's in need of some repairs, so once those are completed and a new cushion is in place, I will put it in here.
I cannot wait!

I don't usually take too many photos from this side of the room, but here's a peek:

I haven't decorated for fall much in here.
A silver pumpkin under the cloche, and some fall hued hydrangeas are really about all that I have.

Thanks for letting me show you what I've been up to.
Like I said, more tweaks and updates are on the horizon- this room isn't completed yet, but I like where it's headed.

More shelf styling to the new cabinet, some curtain updates, and some changes to the side chairs.
Thanks for visiting today!

I hope to be back tomorrow to show you some inspiration for your fall table~

xo Denise

  2. I just spotted the pink secretary and my heart skipped a beat! Love, love, love. The soft, sofa and chair covers and the round coffee table just melt my heart. I do love the cabinet! What a great find! I have an incredibly small house, less than 1100 sq ft with small rooms. I wish I had room for such a nice, large piece. It's great!

  5. Your room looks so pretty and comfy. I really like the way you have the furniture arranged. I have a similar problem with walls in my home and it's a constant struggle to make it feel nice. Oh, and I adore your new cabinet. What a great find.
