fall mantel- a more neutral palette

I'm so behind on my fall decorating!! Usually I get things going right after Labor Day, but with my focus on other things in September, it is just now happening.

Our mantel in our family room was my first focus.  I am hoping to do the porch and some other little areas around the house over the next few days.
I wanted to keep things fairly neutral, without a lot of orange.  I am such a traditionalist, that it was kinda weird for me to step out of bounds with a different palette of colors. You may remember from a few days ago that I shared some of my Pinterest ideas for fall.

So here's what I did.  A mix of farm produce, thrifted items, and stuff I had on hand mostly.

First off, a pumpkin spice latte was in order.  Decorating for fall requires the appropriate beverage.
I headed over to Michael's and bought an extra large grapevine wreath.  The extra chunky twigs on this one was nice.  Their 40 % off coupon saved me a lot!

The painting we usually have over the mantel got moved above the piano.

Then, I went to a local produce stand, EZ Orchards, and purchased some gourds and squash. I picked up mostly greens, whites and a little orange.

It just so happens that my favorite Goodwill was also on that end of town!  I picked up ALOT of stuff- some for the mantel, some for selling, and a few things just for us.  ;)

I found this cute black urn that I thought would be great for the fall / Halloween decor.  It was a couple dollars. The stacked pumpkins look great on top of it.

I got some galvanized buckets from a family member this past year, so I used it to add some height as well.  The white pumpkin you see inside it was a find from Goodwill.  I bought two!

Both with tags on them from Michael's. Goodwill had them marked $2.99 each, so even though Michael's is having a 50% sale on these funkins in stores right now, I still got a great deal.  They were originally orange, but I spray painted them white.  Fresh white pumpkins are so hard to find and usually so expensive, so I broke away from 'natural' to 'reusable'.

I played around with everything a bit, editing and trying out different combinations together.  The wreath just needed a little softness, so I tied a burlap bow to it.

The final touch was my garland.  I pulled a few pages of vintage sheet music and printed out some letters to make it.  I also Googled "leaf" and found a silhouette of a maple leaf I liked, printed that onto the paper, and then cut it out with an exacto knife.  A little twine, and some teeny tiny clothes pins that I've had forever.

In all, for what I had to buy, I think this cost me around $25 to put together.  The good thing for me is that I can keep it up for Thanksgiving!  (maybe a few tweaks, but hey...)
I hope this gives you some great fall mantel ideas!

I can't wait to show you my next project for the porch.  It's what I'll be workin on today.  There's a  project I really wanted to do last year, but never got to.
Some fall slip covered pillows, and an owl for the porch.

And, my other thrifty finds were pretty amazing.  I am so excited!  Even the lady behind me at the checkout said so!  he he!

Have a great Wednesday!
