laurel and bee vintage writing desk

Last Thursday, I picked up this cute little vintage writing desk at a local rummage sale.
I was so excited to work on it!

It had a simple, beautiful shape, and I loved the wheels on the bottom.  Even the knobs were keepers.
Here's the transformation:

It started out like this:

I sanded everything down and then primed it.  The little cubbies inside were spray primed, but since I was using an off white, I ended up brush painting them.  Not an easy task, but it looks better in the end.

With the simplicity of this desk, I wanted a two tone look for this- so I went with a soft green, one that almost has hints of aqua in it.  It's Behr's Premium Winter Fresh.  I have really been liking the little test pots of their Ultra brand.  Nice for small projects!  It only comes in flat, but I still think the finish is beautiful.  Especially if you're distressing a piece.

My plan was to add a feature to the fold down top, so I added a laurel wreath from the Graphics Fairy.

I was actually searching for a 'bee' image, and the laurels came up under my search- she had the same idea I did!  :)  A very classic look.  The little bit of lettering at the bottom adds to the vintage feel.  I kept the pencil lines on the laurel- I like that it adds a bit of an outline to the leaves, and almost casts a grayish tone to the cream.  A small stripe edges the top- it was marked off with painter's tape and painted on for a sharp, clean look.  Very light distressing on the edges of the desk- I didn't want to go too crazy here.
I love this piece!  It went from a boyish blue to a vintage hue.
(ha! had to add in the cheesy rhyme...)

The support hinge for the fold down was missing, so I still need to replace it, but once I do, this piece will be going up for sale.
I can just picture it in an entry way... cute little umbrella stand, a cotton stripey rug, and some vintage accessories...

I really wish I could have staged this indoors, but with most of our downstairs walls in a similar green hue, it would have disappeared.  I did NOT want to haul this puppy upstairs!

If you live near the Willamette Valley and are interested in this piece, you can send me an email at pinkpostcard@comcast.net or message me on my Facebook fan page.
I hope you have a wonderful and safe holiday weekend! I hope to have my front porch in completed Fourth of July mode soon.
My  first Blogaversary is on Monday!  Hope to see you then!
