let's get it started- office makeover

Happy New Year!
I literally woke up at the 5am hour, thinking about fun projects for 2011.
:)
And then I slept for another 3 1/2 hours.
Ah. Christmas Break!

Last night we enjoyed some family glow in the dark bowling with lots of friends.
(I was a little peeved though that during a time when FAMILIES were there to bowl that they ran several extremely inappropriate videos/ songs....including STP's "Sex Type Thing"...  GRRR!!!)

...and then had several more friends over for kid and adult beverages, lots of laughing,
and ringing in the New Year!
For the last 18 years, our little group of friends have kept a journal of sorts- filled with predictions/hopes/wishes  for the coming year.  Most of them are purely for joking around, some are real.  And then we read the previous year's predictions, and laugh about them and see if any really came true.
It's a great New Year's tradition and memory.

I hope you all had a fun and safe evening!

Today, I knew exactly what would be on my agenda- getting the dumping ground of a mess - the office - cleaned up, organized and lookin' good!

I'll be working on this project over the next few days (weeks?) and I hope it comes together the way I have envisioned.

My husband loves the store Hollister.
He said the clothing in there is exactly what he likes.
So, a couple years ago on vacation (when he discovered this place) he tried on a bunch of shirts and pants, and much to his great disappointment, discovered that Hollister is designed for skinny little high school boys.  He was so sad.
So I decided to take a cue from Hollister and give him a home office with the feel of the store.  Minus the ultra loud music and super dark setting!
;)

I let him pick out the paint color.
Here's the 360 degree view of our office; in all of it's unadulterated and unglorified mess.

The main view when you come in. Very disorganized.
It gives you that feeling of not wanting to be in here very long!
We purchased two matching desks and the shelving tower from Target shortly after we moved.
At that time we only had one chair for both desks, so I was pretty excited to get these seagrass chairs from World Market last year!

The room has a nice chair rail that goes around the room.
I'm hoping to add some new artwork and storage to the wall next to my desk.

I made these curtains a couple years ago.  For now, I plan on keeping them as is.

The wall you see in the photo below will be getting some fun shelving.  I plan on heading over to my dad's shop when I'm done writing this and get those going!  I'll show you later this week how to make them!

More mess.
I kinda like the little bump out in the room.  I think it adds an interesting feature to the space.  The furnace pipes run behind the wall here.
My hubby is a big Dylan fan, so I got him this print for his birthday a couple years ago.

The entrance- the wipe board will be going adios.  We use it mostly for a schedule for all of our bills, but I hate that it's on display for our guests to see.
My plan is to purchase a simple desk calendar that won't be so obvious.
Once I clean up the wipe board, our daughter will enjoy using it in the playroom.

I love the vintage surf prints!  They are Tom Blake photos, both in Hawaii.
I got them from a source I've told you about previously- AllPosters.com.
My goal for the desk areas are to make some lumbar-type pillows for the seagrass chairs;
add some desk lamps, some shelving and baskets on my hubby's side of the desk to help with his space staying organized; and hopefully figure out a way to corral all the mess of cords under my desk!
I may need a trip to the Container Store!
(darn!)   :)

I am SO excited to get this project going!

Oh, and one more feature to this room- see the overhead light?
(yawn....)
yeah, I'm not crazy about it either.  It's basic.  It's kind of a weird purply brown color.
And I hope it will be going bye bye real soon.

I think it needs something more like this!

Hopefully I can find one that won't cost me a mortgage payment!
Some of these capiz style fixtures are crazy expensive!
I may even see if I can make one- I'll have to weigh the pros and cons of that route though.

So that's where I'm starting today, friends.
I've already moved all the clutter out of the room, and am working away.

And, in the spirit of home offices, bill paying, and New Year's resolutions, let me share with you a super website that will help you in 2011.
Mint let's you track all of your purchases, investments, budgeting goals, even your home's value in the current market!
It also sends you alerts and messages on ways to save money.  It's super user friendly and free to sign up!

Looking forward to seeing your projects for the New Year!

  7. Can't wait to see the end result. I'm about to take on our home office....pretty it up a bit and try to get more use out of it and less out of the kitchen counter!!! Good luck.

  8. I love your office, Denise. The vibrant color is amazing, and the moment you showed the light fixture, I thought of the same fixture you featured in the next pic. Some of the wicker style lights are nice too, and some won't break the bank. A fun site to visit is Horchow. You might find a light you can recreated with thrifty finds. I'll be working on my office, too. Office/dressing room -- a Goodwill Gal's dream. : )
