day one: living room and office makeover

What am I thinking?!

Well, I know what I'm thinking- I was listening to the hutch in my living room crying softly and saying,
"I'm so lonely...."

Truthfully, this never was the final product for this room.  It was just until I figured out a better way to fill in the huge wall with something substantial.

Add to that, our office dilemma...

I used what we had on hand to fill in the wall space.  The floating shelves have been around here for awhile, and I pulled them out of storage to use here.
The other side of the hutch landed some new artwork as a filler.
It was fine for Stage One, but now we're on to Stage Two!

Our home office had a pair of pine-look book shelves that were doing their bookish duty, but I never loved them in that space either.  The office is one of the most used rooms in the house, and yet it is desperately one of the most disorganized.

Since my husband works from home occasionally, I let him pick the color he'd like to have in there, and we have slowly built up that room to be functional.  But I will tell you more about that, later.
For now, here's the before...

I really really really hate showing how messy and disorganized this place is.  This is pretty much how it is.

I started looking at the height of these shelves and thinking...
And so I grabbed a tape measure and went downstairs and did some more thinking.  And measuring....

And yesterday I hauled these puppies downstairs!
(I don't recommend trying to slide shelving down the stairs by your self, but I did it, and I'm alive.)

Me likey!!

I actually looked at this scenario for several minutes thinking, should I paint the shelves or strip the hutch to match the shelves?
In the end, I decided to paint the shelves- all the other wood elements in our house are a deep color, and it just wasn't flowing.  Plus, the hutch is real pine, and the shelves are....Not.
I didn't want fake and real next to each other.

One handy little trick I've found when I'm putting a room together, and I'm not sure if it's 'working' or not- grab a camera and look through the lens.  Maybe even snap a picture or two.  Sometimes getting a different perspective through the lens really helps!

So, with the decision made to paint, I got the primer out and went to work.

My plan is to get the shelves painted and bring the majority of the books from the office back onto the shelves- but arranged a little nicer :)
I've been inspired recently by shelf accessorizing.  Hopefully I can get everything to come together, and do a bit of shopping around the house to help complete both rooms!

I'll keep you posted on the progress.

Happy Wednesday everyone!

P.S.  I've had so much going on I haven't had the time I'd like to come around and visit my favorite blogs....sorry, I hope to get on here later and do that!
